It is Home to Many Endangered Species

The Everglades in central Florida protects many endangered species, such as the American alligator and many birds.  It also protects many threatened species as well, in hopes that they will flourish enough to not become endangered.  Our swamps are protected lands that keep these animals in safe environments so they can continue to survive.

It Supplies Water to Millions

Even though it provides a home to a diverse range of wildlife, it also works in a practical way for us humans as well.  The Everglades and surrounding swamp areas provides water to millions of Floridians each year.  Many of our residents rely on this ecosystem to keep their homes up and running.

It is Actually All Shallow Water

Many of our visitors are surprised to know that the water here in the swamps is actually very shallow.  It is typically only about 4-5 feet deep, with the deepest parts only going up to 9 feet.  Our airboats make it possible to travel through this shallow water, as the bottom of the boat is flat and the motor is located on the back instead of on the bottom.

It is Freshwater

With the peninsular shape of the state of Florida, many people are also surprised to learn that the swamps are actually all freshwater.  This provides a unique and diverse ecosystem, as this area allows many birds, fish, amphibians, and other animals to thrive here.  It actually becomes a refuge for many of these animals to seek protection from the dangers of larger bodies of water.

It is Very Large

The Florida Everglades actually covers over 1.5 million acres of land, which makes it one of the largest parks in the country.  Even though we spend our time exploring this land frequently, we still have not chartered through most of the waters because of the expansive nature of the property.
