What Is a Frogging Trip?
Frogging is one of the oldest ways to spend a Florida night, and it is a blast. We run the airboat slow through the marsh with a bright light, pick up the shine of a frog's eyes in the grass, and slip in close to grab him. You come home with a bag of frog legs and a story about how you got them.
A trip is $800 for up to two people. We keep it small on purpose, because frogging is hands on. Both of you stay busy the whole time, one working the light, one reaching for frogs, then swapping off. If you have never done it, you will pick it up in the first ten minutes.
How Do You Catch the Frogs?
It comes down to the light and a steady hand. A frog freezes when the beam hits its eyes, which gives you the few seconds you need to get close. From there you take it by hand or with a gig. We chase bullfrogs and pig frogs, the big ones that carry real meat on the back legs.
The airboat is what makes it work out here. Frogs sit up in shallow, grassy water that a regular boat would never reach, and the airboat glides right over the top of it. Captain Seth runs quiet and slow so you can hear the frogs calling before you ever see them.
Warm months are frog months. Once the summer rains have the marsh full, the pig frogs get loud and the grabbing is good. If you want a different night on the water, we also run bow fishing trips for gar and other rough fish.
Are the Frog Legs Worth It?
Ask anyone who grew up out here. Fresh frog legs, dredged in seasoned flour and dropped in hot oil, are some of the best eating in Florida. They taste clean and mild, closer to a tender piece of chicken than to fish, and there is nothing like frying up legs you caught with your own hands a few hours earlier.
We launch from Christmas, FL, about 30 minutes east of Orlando, so you are frogging real marsh, not a roadside ditch. Bring a cooler and something to put the frogs in, and we handle the boat, the light, and putting you on the good spots.
